"In Your Face: The Culture of Beauty and You" + "The Looks Book"
I havent read these, skimmed over them, but I can definitely say they are worth a read. "In Your Face: The Culture of Beauty and You" by Shari Graydon is about the obsession with beauty and what defines beauty in mainstream. It's about looking past looks. Both books have a great deal of historical culture within, and it is easy to see "the norm" of what's considered beautiful (the majority's opinion of certain aspects, such as weight) changes over the centuries. Many centuries ago, larger women were favored. Now, 7 out of 10 men drool over very skinny women with very large breasts, even fake breasts. (Dont get me started on topic of plastic surgery, and how there are even butt implants nowadays.) Some women need to be reminded, this is not the entire male population's opinion, and that beauty is not a checklist of traits.
"The Looks Book," from creators of gurl.com (Rebecca Odes, Esther Drill, & Heather McDonald) also writes of the extremes people go to for beauty, how women are objectified and some of them, in turn, objectify their own selves because of this learned behavior. This book has some great advice for women who are insecure about their looks. What I find interesting about the book is the retro fashion and beauty talk. It also has a section about creating looks, such as the flapper girl, mod/new wave, bad girl, gamine, bohemian, and others. I'm in love with the flapper girl look, faerie princess, and bad girl. Gurl.com is an adolescent site, but it does have some kewl stuff on it.
